Parts of the Natura 2000 nature reserve Ilperveld were used as a landfill into the late 80s. An integral approach of water, soil and nature was required to restore it into a clean nature reserve. For this reason the ‘Integral Ilperveld’ project was started in 2002; a collaboration between the province of North Holland, Landscape North Holland, Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board and the municipality of Landsmeer. Commissioned by the province of North Holland, ACV has participated in several partial projects in Ilperveld.
Design and drafting specifications
Due to technical problems, the remediation of one of the landfills was temporarily halted. ACV suggested several remediation alternatives, after which a preferred variant was worked out in detail into a final design and RAW specifications. The result is an optimal remediation variant in which insulation of the landfill material and the enhancement of nature’s value were given first priority. ACV realized this project in a period of only four and a half months’ time – from site visit to start of implementation. All required licences were organized and acquired on time. In view of the many interests and sensitivities of the various stakeholders, good communication was the decisive mainstay in the realization of the entire process in such a short period of time.

Management and supervision
In various projects ACV takes care of the management and environmental support; from the construction of dredging depots to the remediation of several landfills. Execution of projects is only allowed in the period outside the bird nesting season which requires an efficient and effective steering.
Future layout dredging depots
In Ilperveld there are three large dredging depots with a total size of approximately 40 hectares. After a pilot that has already taken place the final layout and finishing operations of the depots will start in 2010-2011. Based on existing data ACV has drawn up outlines for the natural layout of the depots. In view of the unique character of the project, the (geo)technical preconditions, soil hydrology, and the nature objectives to be met, this is a great challenge. For each depot individually, ACV will draw up a complete layout plan.
